Around the Ship

This was a wonderful 10 day cruise to Mexico from my home town San Diego.

Cabo San Lucas

At the pier we boarded a 22 passenger glass-bottom boat for a  trip to the very tip of the longest, most desolate and, perhaps, the most beautiful peninsula in the world. A short ride brings us to pristine beaches, towering rock formations and the famed Los Arcos--a dramatic natural rock monument that arches starkly out of the sea. An enlightening narration by J.M. Cousteau comments on the underwater life, wildlife, ecology and major points of interest in the area, including the early history of Baja California.

Mazatlan

More than 9,000 billfish are caught in the waters off Mazatlan every year, with marlin running from November to May and sailfish from April to November. With the record marlin catch set at 1,200 lbs, this is an ideal location for old pros to try their luck, and for hopeful beginners to experience the thrill of a catch. But that wasn't in the cards today. We didn't catch anything.

Acapulco

An air-conditioned motorcoach  take us  to the most interesting parts of this beautiful resort city. From a scenic vantage point near Las Brisas Hotel, marvel at the natural beauty with which the city is blessed, as well as the man made additions to the panorama.

Continuing to the outskirts of town, you will stop at either the Acapulco Princess Hotel, constructed to resemble an Aztec pyramid, or the nearby Mayan Palace Hotel, resembling a Mayan temple. Travel past many other luxury hotels, the International Convention Center, residential areas of the permanent residents, and shopping centers; and see the sharp contrasts of the old and new parts of the city.

During a stop at La Quebrada,  enjoyed a refreshment while watching the world-famous cliff divers before transferring to the Acapulco That afternoon I parasailed!  Check it out, because I'm afraid of heights.

Zihuataneja

We enjoyed this sail and snorkel adventure on board this custom built trimaran by casting off from Zihuatanejo Bay and motoring us up to Playa Manzanillo (approximately 45 minutes), where we anchor near a coral reef close to the beach. We swim, snorkel or walk on the beach for an hour. Back on board, fresh fruits and sweet rolls will be served as the Tri-Star runs back into the bay of Zihuatanejo. We sailed by the cruise ship with an open bar of domestic beer, tequila and local drinks, while your costumed crew offers a comical Mexican fiesta before heading back to Puerto Mio.

Puerto Vallarta

Las Caletas, John Huston's hideaway until his death, was bought lock, stock and barrel by our tour operator. Located at the tip of the bay of Puerto Vallarta, and only accessible by boat, his home, complete with the original furnishings and memorabilia, is three-sided and open to the beach.

Our tour begins with a ride aboard a launch that will take you across the bay to this idyllic paradise that is ours for the day. As we disembark the launch wel notice that there is a collection of small beaches set in an idyllic setting complete with shade and lounges. There is kayaking and snorkeling for the experienced or for the beginner with qualified instructors and all equipment  was included. Also included in this tour, should you choose, is a nature walk or the opportunity to learn how to make authentic paella and see how tortillas are traditionally made. There is a small souvenir cabana should you wish to purchase film, postcards, or a small remembrance of your day.
