7 Incredible Natural Phenomena you've never seen

"Relámpago del Catatumbo" (Catatumbo lightning) . . . is a cloud-to-cloud lightning that forms a voltage arc more than five kilometre high during 140 to 160 nights a year, 10 hours a night, and as many as 280 times an hour.

I was only aware of one of these, and it was the one I least expected to see on a list of this kind. Interesting stuff.

How Stairway to Heaven Almost Destroyed Led Zeppelin

"Stairway to Heaven" remains the closest thing Zeppelin has to a hit, as it was their policy not to release singles. In 1971, when the band refused to edit the song into four minutes of radio-friendly pop, stations simply started playing the whole track, and it soon became the most requested song on rock radio.

1507 Map Shows America, South America & the Pacific Ocean

Scholars are confused as to how a German mapmaker knew the Pacific Ocean existed years before explorers found it, and how he depicted South America so accurately. "From the writings of Vespucci you couldn't have prepared [this] map," John Hebert, chief of the geography and map division at the library, told Reuters.

Apparently the Library of Congress paid $10 million for it after it spent 400 years in the library of a German castle.

Olberman: Bush is either a pathological presidential liar, or an idiot-in-chief.

We have either a president who is too dishonest to restrain himself from invoking WW3 about Iran at least 6 weeks after he had to have known that the analogy would be irresponsible hyperbole — or we have a president too transcendently stupid not to have asked whether the fairy tales he either created or was fed, were still even remotely plausible.

KO tears into Bush, using his own words to prove he knew he was "exaggerating" the Iranian nuclear threat.

Oil leaders' private debate televised by mistake

Why Is The U.S. $2.9 Trillion In Debt?

Economists love a mystery – especially if it involves a missing $2.9 trillion in United States debt. Every quarter the Department of Commerce comes up with the US "International Investment Position." In other words, the country is by far the world's biggest debtor nation, while a quarter century ago, the US was the world's largest creditor nation.
